Strap on your seat belt for a wild ride through the true-to-reality Hollywood bubble gum pop human horror show that is the life and times of Junie Spoons - a once popular child star and tween idol who peaks at the age of 18, d-listed to the where-are-they-now junk drawer of society.
A puppet animation told a la VH1’s Behind the Music, “Dollhouse: The Eradication of Female Subjectivity from American Popular Culture” charts the rise and fall of Junie’s career as her life is splashed all over the media and recounted by those who claim to know her - a greedy record producer, a narcissistic mother, an opportunistic friend, ex-boyfriends and the like - until she is inevitably eliminated from her own story.
The debut feature film of writer/director Nicole Brending will have you in painful laughter as the film blatantly ignores political correctness in a bold, no-holds-barred look at the insidious mechanisms governing misogyny in America. With hand-made puppets and original pop songs, “Dollhouse” will have you (guiltily) singing along to Junie’s tragically true tale.
Writer, director, producer and star of “Dollhouse: The Eradication of Female Subjectivity from American Popular Culture,” Nicole Brending recently won the Silver George for Best Short at the Moscow International Film Festival for her short film “Selfied.” She is the co-writer of the film “The Artist’s Wife” starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern, set for release in 2019. She is an alumna of the Berlinale Talent Campus and Co-Production Market as well as the Nantucket Screenwriters Colony. She received her MFA in Film from Columbia University. Gemini-Award winning composer Jean-Olivier Begin began his scoring career during the Henry Mancini summer program in LA. His first score (for director Nicole Brending, also a puppet movie) for the film “Operated by Invisible Hands” won a Student Emmy for “Best Composition.” He has composed for several national Canadian broadcast and has also provided music and accompaniment to many great artists including Feist. BEHIND THE SCENES
The entire film was shot over the course of a year in the director’s apartment in Saint Paul, MN. With a limited budget, she built all of the sets and made the dolls and then shot the film while puppeteering primarily on her own. She enlisted the help of her friend, animator Joe Midthun to create an NES-style video game of Junie being chased by the paparazzi, which is actually playable. Voice over was recorded on an old iPod in her bathroom while the actors wore towels over their heads to dampen the ambient noise. Because Jean-Olivier is based on Montreal, they collaborated remotely on the music via email and Skype.
